How to Tell Real Gold from Fake — Professional Authentication Explained

The biggest fear when buying or selling gold is encountering fakes. Judging by eye, by feel, or by colour alone is unreliable — modern counterfeiting techniques can easily fool these old-fashioned methods. Below, we explain the principles of professional authentication, how to read hallmarks, and common faking techniques, so you can trade with confidence.

XRF Spectrometry: The First Line of Defence

Reputable gold dealers commonly use XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometry). The principle: an X-ray beam is directed at the gold item’s surface, causing the metal atoms to emit characteristic fluorescence. The instrument analyses the spectrum and, within seconds, displays the percentage composition of each element — all non-destructively, without scratching the item.

XRF does have a limitation, though: it primarily measures surface composition. If a gold-plated layer is thick enough, the reading may still show “solid gold,” fooling a single test. So for gold bars or thick jewellery, the professional approach is to combine XRF with density testing, ultrasonic inspection, or — when necessary — cutting the bar for internal verification. Multiple checks are the safest approach.

Traditional Gold-Testing Methods and Their Limitations

  • Touchstone + nitric acid: The gold item is rubbed on a touchstone to leave a streak, then acid is applied to observe the reaction. Low cost, but it leaves slight abrasion marks and, again, only tests the surface.
  • Density (water displacement) method: Pure gold has a density of about 19.3 g/cm³. By measuring volume via water displacement and calculating density, the entire item can be tested. The limitation: tungsten’s density (about 19.25 g/cm³) is nearly identical to gold’s, so tungsten-cored fakes can slip through.
  • Fire assay: Solid gold retains its colour after firing, while K-gold or fake gold discolours or oxidises. This is a destructive test, generally only used as a final check before melting for buyback.

Reading Hallmarks: Fineness and Refinery Marks

Reputable gold jewellery and bars are stamped with hallmarks — the first step in verifying authenticity:

Investment gold bars will also bear the refinery mark, a serial number, and the weight. Hallmarks should be crisp and properly aligned; blurry, crooked lettering, or marks inconsistent with the item itself are warning signs. Note, however, that hallmarks can themselves be forged — so don’t judge authenticity by the stamp alone.

Common Counterfeiting Techniques and Self-Protection

Common faking methods include: gold-plating the surface to mimic solid gold, hiding a tungsten core inside a bar, adulterating with high-density metals like rhenium, and selling gold-filled jewellery as solid gold. These fakes are difficult to detect by eye, with a magnet, or by the old “bite test.”

The most reliable self-protection measures:

  • Ask the dealer to test the item in front of you using XRF equipment, and to explain the readings;
  • When buying, obtain a formal receipt listing the fineness, weight, and sale price;
  • Be wary of gold from unknown sources at suspiciously low prices.
